1992年鹿児島実業高校からJリーグ・横浜フリューゲルスに入団。1994年にはアトランタオリンピックを目指すU-21日本代表に選出され、 主将として28年ぶりとなるオリンピック出場に貢献。1996年、アトランタオリンピック本大会では、ブラジルを破る「マイアミの奇跡」などを演出し、サッカーファンのみならず、広く注目される事となる。その後、ブラジルのサントスFC・ゴイアスEC、韓国の安養LGチータース・仁川ユナイテッドと渡り歩き、2005年5月19日に現役引退を表明。 その後は2006年FIFAワールドカップドイツ大会、2008年北京オリンピックともに期間中は現地にて取材活動をし、ジャーナリストとして活躍。現在は自身のＺＯＮＯサッカースクールを主催し、普及活動を行う。2009年にはラモス監督率いるビーチサッカー日本代表に召集され現役復 帰。同年11月に開催されたUAEドバイでのＷ杯において、チームのベスト８に貢献した。その他フルマラソン、トライアスロン、フライフィッシン グのも挑戦し、活動範囲を広げている。

日本体育大学卒業後、単身オランダへ渡り、オランダ1部の名門フィテッセでU-11からU-19のコーチ、監督を務め、2006年夏には日本人史上初となるオランダサッカー協会公認1級、UEFA公認A級ライセンスを取得。その後、東京23FC監督や元浦和レッズ監督ゼリコ・ペトロヴィッチ氏の通訳等を務めている。
